Dreamed up in Byron Bay, local Aussie brand Miyako – meaning ‘beautiful’ in Japanese - is all about celebrating the female form and empowering the wearer.
What first started as a passion project for co-founders Sarah and Charlotte, Miyako has quickly grown into a must-have collection of lingerie-meets-nightwear, featuring thoughtful and delicate details.
We chatted to Sarah Lamkin, Creative Director and Designer, on all things Miyako.
How did the Miyako brand come about?
Charlotte and I have been friends for years, and were living together in Byron Bay when we launched Miyako.
Having worked for some of Australia’s leading womenswear brands we saw a gap in the market for lingerie which balanced femininity with comfort.
Having both worked in the fashion industry for many years - Charlotte in sales and marketing and myself in design and production, we knew our skills would perfectly complement one another.
We’re both romantics at heart and have such similar tastes, so working together to create the brand and design the first collection felt so effortless.

We love how femme your designs are, what does femininity mean to you?
To us, feeling feminine isn’t always about being dressed up - it’s about feeling relaxed and comfortable in your own skin.
I think we’d both agree that time spent unwinding at home, whether by ourselves or with our partners, is when we feel most at ease. Miyako is made for those moments, whether it be a slow morning getting lost in a book, or a night on the couch with your lover enjoying a glass of wine.
With every style we aim to hit that sweet spot, with flattering, thoughtful designs that are also comfortable and easy to wear.
Is Miyako lingerie made to be worn as underwear only, or can you style it as outerwear too?
Our pieces are designed to give customers flexibility with how they wear them. The Lucie Nightie is as perfect for sleeping in, as it is for slipping over your swimmers for a beach date.

The Darcy Shorts look gorgeous styled with an oversized tee and sneakers for your morning coffee run.

The Sophia Singlet we designed to look as cute with your boyfriend’s boxers (because they’re always the comfiest), as it does with your favourite denim.

We’ve seen you talk about sustainable design. In what ways is Miyako sustainable?
With every collection, we’re committed to taking steps to be more sustainable.
At the moment, we’re focusing on using sustainable materials where possible. Our Le Matin collection is crafted from 100% GOTS certified organic cotton, which has many social and environmental benefits.
Another area we’re Providing transparency of our manufacturing process. We have a very close working relationship with our manufacturer, in order to reduce wastage and other environmental impacts of our production.
Do you feel being based in Byron, a place many feel has a strong spiritual and environmental significance, has an impact on your brand and designs?
Absolutely. The natural beauty of our hometown, and its people, inspire us every day.
With Australian borders closed, it seems everyone wants to head to Byron right now! Do you have any tips for visitors?
Oh goodness, we could write a book! For now, we’ll give you three…
1. Sparrow for your morning coffee
2. Raes Cellar Bar for a strong margarita
3. Di Vino for the best pasta in town
What’s next for Miyako?
We’re currently expanding our range of 100% GOTS certified cotton styles with new shapes and colourways, which we’ll launch in time for summer. There’s also something special coming for the brides! Stay tuned!
