Periods and pleasure? We’re all about it.

You might actually be surprised to find that pleasure (be it sex or masturbation) is even more exciting during your period. So, don’t let your period put a halt on your pleasure (or pain relief, but more on that later).

For those amongst us who are new to period sex, new period brand Scarlet and their go-to sex expert Georgia Grace dishes everything you want to know on the benefits of periods and pleasure.

Here's the benefits of having a bloody good time:

1. Relieves menstrual symptoms.

Relieves cramps: Menstrual cramps are a result of the uterus contracting to release its lining. When you experience orgasm, the muscles of your uterus also contract. Then they release. That release can bring some relief from period cramps. That’s because, during orgasm, the body releases a rush of dopamine and serotonin. These hormones act as natural pain relievers.

Relieves headaches: Around half of menstruators who suffer from migraines or headaches get them during their periods. Although most people with menstrual migraines avoid sex during their attacks because they’re so debilitating, many of those who do have sex say it partially or completely relieves their headaches.

It can also help boost your mood and improve sleep, which is obviously a bonus any day of the week, but especially helpful when you’re on your period.

2. It feels (extra) good.

We know it’s stating the obvious to say that masturbation and sex feel good. Pleasure triggers the release of feel-good neurochemicals called endorphins, which can be the perfect remedy for those feeling flat. That’s great any time of the month, however during your period, for some, sex can feel EXTRA good.

Increased desire: Have you noticed that your libido changes throughout your cycle? Whilst arousal is different for every human, some may be too distracted, uncomfortable or in too much pain to even contemplate being touched, but others may be horny AF on their period, thanks to those wonderful hormonal fluctuations. That's because your estrogen and testosterone are low on day 1 of your cycle, but they start to rise by day 3. Some report they feel more aroused and more sensitive to pleasure around this time.

Natural lubrication: Blood acts as natures lube, which can make sex more pleasurable, be it solo or with a partner. It also means a more frictionless experience when you’re using vibrators. (If you’re using vibrators when you’re on your period, it’s important to use high grade material – like Smile Makers’ medical grade silicone - and clean it thoroughly after use).

Builds connection: Many say they feel tender and vulnerable when they’re bleeding, sensual pleasure is a powerful way to feel connected with your body or someone else. Oxytocin also known as the "cuddle hormone" or the "love hormone," is released during sex, and can lower our defences and strengthen our emotional bonds with others.

So basically, we’re talking the GOAT of all orgasms.

3. It’s fun, so why not?

If the only thing holding you back from a bloody good time is a little mess, why not try:

Sex in the shower: Keep thing simple: clean as you go!

Condoms for the win: If you’re using a vibrator or toy, try using a condom over the top. It will protect your vibrator and make it a little easier to clean post-sesh. Afterwards, we recommend using a toy cleanser that maintains the integrity of the material, and keeps your device hygienic and ready to go when you next want to use it.

Dress for the occasion: Keep your period undies close by so you can pop them back on after.
